Why AI Hallucinates Config Files (And How To Catch It)
AI Config Files DevOps Ollama Copilot
Large language models are pattern engines, not product‑specific experts. When you ask them for config files, they will happily invent variables, flags, and options that look right but do not actually exist.
1. What “hallucination” means in config land
When an AI “hallucinates” a config file, it:
- creates environment variables that the app does not support
- mixes syntax from multiple tools (e.g. Docker, Nextcloud, Jellyfin, Ollama)
- adds performance flags that have no effect
- places settings in the wrong layer (client option in server config, Docker option in
.env, etc.)
The file looks professional
